Summer Festival: August 11-20, 2017

Welcome to our 20th anniversary season! This year’s program is sure to dazzle, delight and astound you. Highlights include Beethoven’s 8th and 9th Symphonies, orchestral music by Copland and Smetana, over 50 chamber works by Dvořák, Mendelssohn, Mozart, Grieg, Poulenc, Bach (to name a few), music by composer in residence Moritz Eggert, formal and informal performances involving Happenstance Theater, and much more.

Northern Exposure (12:00 pm) – free concert of Grieg, Ritter, Kaipanen
Handel Extravaganza (7:30 pm) – Water Music and much more

Day 2 – Saturday, August 12
Bohemian Inspirations (12:00 pm) – free concert of Dvořák and Biber
Happenstance: BrouHaHa (3:00 pm) – original theater in a historic private home
Journeys and Landscapes (7:30 pm) – Brahms, Saariaho, Smetana, and much more
Nightcap: Cabaret! (approx. 10:00 pm) – music and drinks in intimate setting

Day 3 – Sunday, August 13
Sunday Morning Service (10:00 and 11:00 am) – chamber music at several area church services
Peter and the Wolf (3:30 pm) – free family concert with ballet
Commedia dell’Arte (7:30 pm) – comedic masterpieces by Mozart and others at Blackfriars Playhouse

Day 4 – Monday, August 14
Iron Curtains (12:00 pm) – free concert of Pärt, Eggert, Shostakovich
Hollywood Songbook (7:30 pm) – Bernstein, Stravinsky, Copland, and much more

Day 5 – Tuesday, August 15
Take Five (12:00 pm) – free concert of Beethoven, Eggert, D’India
Meet the Composer: Moritz Eggert (3:00 pm) – conversation and performance by Moritz Eggert
Early Keyboard Extravaganza (7:30 pm) – Schubert, Mozart, Couperin, and organ improvisation
Nightcap: Elizabethan Songbook (approx. 10:00 pm) – songs for lute and voice at Ox-Eye

Day 6 – Wednesday, August 16
Mendelssohn’s Magic (12:00 pm) – a free all-Mendelssohn program on period instruments
GerMania (7:30 pm) – Beethoven Symphony No 8, plus Wagner and much more

Day 7 – Thursday, August 17
La Bonne Chanson (12:00 pm) – free concert of Fauré, Poulenc, Biscardi, Britten
Meet the Musicians: Harp and Lute (3:00 pm) – discussion and demonstration with two SMF artists
Pranksters and Puppet Masters (7:30 pm) – Stravinsky, Guinivan, Haydn, and more

Day 8 – Friday, August 18
Je ne sais quoi (12:00 pm) – free concert of Telemann, Poulenc, Ravel
Baroque Inside/Out (7:30 pm) – Bach’s Magnificat and more

Piano Extravaganza (12:00 pm) – free concert of works for one to eight hands at one keyboard

Beethoven’s Storm (and an Eclipse!) (11:00 am) – music by Beethoven and Wadsworth at Blackfriars
Brunch and Lecture: Dive into Beethoven’s Ninth (12:30 pm) – extended lecture over brunch
Festival Finale: Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony (3:00 pm) – complete period-instrument performance
